CFMC 2M Foxhunt - June 19th, 2010
by Tom N9CBA

It was a hot day, but it turned into a really nice hunt night for
the June 2010 CFMC foxhunt. That Saturday was nearly the longest day
of they year.

Patty and Matt had hunted with Tom N9CBA on the May CFMC hunt, and
they had been the ones to find foxes Tony and Joanie in the woods.
Matt had wanted to hide in the Rt 30 and 34 region -- a high area
about 4 miles east of their Montgomery home. Checking a topo map
showed the highest places. After checking several candidate
locations, the foxes, Tom N9CBA, Matt N9SEM, Patty, and John WD9EXW
selected a place under some high-tension power lines that used
wooden poles.

Matt's M-squared 4-element Yagi was placed vertical about 20 feet
atop a pole, and the pole was strapped to one of those poles. The
antenna was driven by Matt's new 75-watt Yaesu FT-2900R. The antenna
was carefully pointed at the starting point in Addison. The 30 watt
setting was sufficient, despite the distance, due to the
advantageous location and antenna. The distance had been estimated
to be farther during planning the required transmitting setup, but
the calculator at http://www.chemical-ecology.net/java/lat-long.htm
calculates 20.8889 statute miles to 41.707858N 88.28363W from the
41.944116N 88.030041W Addison starting point. Everybody had a good
signal throughout the hunt.

There was an adjacent water tower, which had been placed there
because of the high altitude. The water tower may have served as a
beacon marker to help guide the foxes at the end. That would explain
the short hunt times that all had, despite nobody taking the I-88
tollway for the faster way.

The munch was at a new Portillos in growing Oswego.

It turned out to be a wonderful spot just on the other side of the fence behind Joanie's work. I just should have hidden a little further back on the big hill instead of down in the hole. Charlie said he hid there before Lex was born. Some  hunters  just steps away didn't see us. 5 watts at 35 feet aat, 10 db antenna gain.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - Mar 20th, 2010
by Tom N9CBA

On the March 2010 CFMC Foxhunt, Tom N9CBA hid in the car on the wet
snowy night. The car was parked by a large dumpster in back of a
business. The location was south of Schick Road, east of County Farm
road, and north of the railroad tracks. The vertical antenna on the
roof was fed with the 25 watt setting on the transceiver.

Everybody got the signal at the starting point, and everybody took
good advantage of the signal. The winning route was to take Irving
Park Road west for most of the distance. Mike and Paul went south to
North avenue, but they came back north to Army Trail road at
Bloomingdale Road. Charlie was south of the tracks and saw the first
two places score, but he had to take the path around to get to the
right location.

Munch was at Ruby Tuesday at Schick Road and Gary Avenue.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - Feb 20th, 2010
by Tony AA9CC

We decided to go to Micro Center to look at computer hardware before the
hunt, but when we arrived there was no time for shopping and we looked
for a hide spot. I saw on google maps that 35th street dead ended into Rt 83
on the east side and when we checked it out we found a developers
track of upscale mansions that had replaced the Oak Brook Farm. But due to
the recent bubble pop of the housing market, progress was only a mile loop
of curbed pavement and numbered lots. With some effort we got the two
wheel drive Jeep Cherokee into lot 13. It seems the slightest
irregularity would cause the wheels to spin in the 2 inches of snow.
(defiantly not a man's car). In place, we waited 15 minutes for the hunt
to start and released the hounds with only 5 watts and a quarter wave
mag mount. The spot was much better that expected and the winner, Tom,
took the most ridiculous route S 355 to N 55 to N 294 to W 88 to
Midwest rd. The other hunters followed soon after except for Charlie,
who, after another half hour gave up. We found out later that he lost a
filling and was taking pain medication. Post hunt gathering was at Connie's
Pizza.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - January 16th, 2010
by Mike WA9FTS

Charlie gave the hunters a good signal at the starting point. There were 4 hunt teams: Tony AA9CC and Joan KC9QQY, Tom N9CBA, Don W9RA and Mike WA9FTS and Paul N9LXF. Paul and I headed south on Rt 83 with several of the hunters getting on I355 and then on I 290. Tony and Joan got off at 31st St and up to Cermak Rd. They correctly found Enterprise Dr and drove to the end in a parking lot near I-88 to find Charlie in his Jeep for the win. In the mean time Paul and I went down to Ogden and east to York Rd north to Cermak. We chose Clearwater Dr which was just east of the correct road and could not find a way west until much later. In the measn time, Tom and then Don found Charlie. We then found Enterprise Dr and found Charlie by driving directly to him to end the hunt.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - Dec 19th, 2009
by Mike WA9FTS

Paul and I finally got to hid for Charlie KB9DIM who hid months ago for us. The race for overall champ could be decided by this hunt. After the CFAR hunt AA9CC (current champ), KB9DIM and N9CBA (previous 7 yr champ) were deadlocked with 13 wins each. Charlie KB9DIM won the ACL hunt and went ahead. If he won tonight, it would be all over.
Paul N9LXF and I found the end of Lively Blvd at the I-90 tollway in Elk Grove Village. Access was off Higgins Rd. We parked looking out to the end of Lively and waited for the hunters to arrive.
The hunt started at 8:05 and we spotted Tom N9CBA first who pulled up to the end and turned away from us into a parking lot. A minute later Charlie KB9DIM showed up and started to turn toward Tom. Then suddenly he stopped and backed up and turned around toward us. Tom saw this and the chase was on. I have a pix of Charlie in the lead with Tom back by several hundred feet. Charlie made it to us and Tom was about 7 sec later. I took a pix of both as Charlie sealed the overall win and CFMC champ as well. Several minutes later we saw Tony's car arrive and park at the end of Lively, A minute later Don W9RA showed up and drove past to secure 3rd. Don went back and talked to someone I thought was Tony. Three minutes later this person walked to us and I realized it was Joan KC9QQY. She secured last place.
Then she told us she left Tony out in a residential area but could not contact him. We tried on CFMC without Tony repsonding. Joan said he did not take a radio with him and did not have a cell phone either. We started to transmit and drive around to find him. About 25 min later Charlie found him near where we had hid. Tony was angry but we tried to tell him the hunt was over and we were concerned for his well-being. Tony also had his portable gear in the "Tone" mode and cound not hear what we were saying to him.
We went to Lou Malnati's Pizzaria which was only a few blocks away. There are pix of the hunters inside.

Results:

1. Charlie KB9DIM, Alexis N9VRA
2. Tom N9CBA

CFMC Foxhunt for November 2009

Hi,

We agreed to redo the hunt from last month. We had a phone call from Tom and a text message from Charlie that afternoon urging us toward sensibility and restrain our hiding ambitions. We did so by hiding in a thicket just 100 feet south of the indicated position on Google maps and not in the cavernous ravine 1/4 mile south in the deep woods. The ravine can be made out in the Google terrain feature. The area is a nature preserve posted with no exclusionary signage and has hiking trails. We hiked the rock strewn ravine that afternoon, hoping to find arrow heads, fossils and gold nuggets, but instead found some washed out and over tuned vintage 1940's cars that had been pushed down the intractable100 plus foot slope decades ago.

CFMC Foxhunt for October 2009

We found a super spot, but it was a flop.

This, the entrance to a nearly 2 long mile service road on Cicero just north of the draw bridge over the canal, has no access restriction signage visible in the Google street view. Later we were told by Charlie that this is the exit for the road and the entrance, just a few yards to the north, has a Water Reclamation sign. This entrance was not accessible from the south due to oncoming traffic tip toeing over the resurfacing at the adjoining railroad track crossing.

Entrance on Google street view:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=17756+Bluff+Rd,+Romeoville,+Will,+Illinois+60446&ll=41.820179,-87.744117&spn=0,359.993826&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=41.820231,-87.743421&panoid=u3JgAz24I220_OO_6y17Hg&cbp=12,300.2,,1,-0.83

We were delighted at the length of this road earlier that afternoon and finding a jeep trail up small mound just before the "Absolutely no Trespassing" sign. The trail lead to a large field with a lake. Most of the field was the 12 foot tall invasive grass, like one would see on an expedition to India on elephant back, with some Canadian thistles mixed in.  After an expiratory hike we discovered that the well worn paths through the grass was not made by locals to favorite fishing holes, but the work of beavers, logging highways for dismembered tree parts. We were fortunate when we decided at the last minute not to hide at the end of the path, at the freshly chewed down tree, but in the adjoining thicket, as the crashing racket the beavers made that night during the hunt was louder that a full bore fox hunter with gear. A bit scary. They were as big as a medium dog, with teeth the size of fingers! Charlie found us around 10:00 PM

CFMC September 2009 Foxhunt Report

KB9DIM & N9VRA FOXES

I had seen a potential hiding spot while driving to a healthcare facility in the area, on several occasions. After searching on Google Earth for a good spot, and not finding anything suitable, I decided to drive to this potential site, to take a close look, and see if it would be a wise choice. When I got on site, I was pleased to see that it was not a well manicured park area, thus providing decent cover for the fox, and it was not posted as no trespassing. The hiding spot was in a spit of land that was between to large ponds (See pix 1). To a casual observer, it could appear to be a land bridge that completely divided the two ponds, however that was not the case, there was a gap of water. I chose a hiding spot near the southern end of the narrow peninsula, hiding the antenna in a tree, and laying the coax out, along the water line, so the hunters would not easily see it. The hiding spot was 16.3 miles, as the RF flies, from the starting point, with a beam heading of approximately 20 degrees (See pix 2).

The antenna was a 5/8 l J-pole nestled in a tree at 8 feet, fed with 50 feet of RG-58 coax using a Yeasu FT-2800 set to its 25 watt level. The hunt started on time, and all of the hunters reported that they had a signal. It was about 40 minutes into the hunt, when we spotted our first hunter in the area, AA9CC, driving on Deerfield road to the south of us. He was quickly joined by N9CBA, who did not waste time, and drove around to the north, which was the only direction to approach us from. We lost track of AA9CC, until we saw a hunter walking down from the north, it was Tony AA9CC, walking past us to the waters edge, he turned around and started walking back when he spotted Alexis and I laying in the weeds. Tom was next down the path, and it appeared to us, that he had spotted the antenna in the tree, he came further south and quickly scored. We continued to hide, knowing that other teams were in the immediate area, Mike WA9FTS, was having difficulty in a tangle of trees, and I do mean a Tangle of Trees, to our north. Once he had gotten himself out of the mess he was in, he got onto the path that lead him down the strip of land we were on, and was able to score. Don, W9RA, parked his vehicle along Deerfield Rd. and got out on foot. During one of our transmissions, he shown a light on us, and from his vantage point, he was able to see me in the grass. Since there was no quick way for him to get to us, we ended the hunt and went to the RAM restaurant near the corner of Lake Cook Road, and Milwaukee Avenue.

by Tony AA9CC

After an hour of looking I found this spot, a narrow walk between 2 fences, behind a water tank south west corner of I55 and I355 junction. Power was 35 watts through 50 ft of RG-8 foam coax to the 4 element foxhunt beam at 8 ft, pointed east at a water tower. 22 miles south from Centennial Park in Addison.(see google map link) All had a start bearing except N9CBA. A fairly routine hunt except for the large spider Joanie spotted near my neck. Charlie walked up at 8:45 followed my Mike and
Paul a minute later. Don found us immediately after a requested extra transmission. Tom lagged at 9:20, spent some time walking on other side of tollway. All remarked that it was a good spot. Munches at Max and Ermas on 75th st and 355.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - July 18th, 2009
by Mike WA9FTS

Charlie KB9DIM and Alexis N9VRA hid for me due to mechanical problems with Charlie's hunting vehicle. It has since been fixed. Charlie got the hunters off to a good start with a strong signal to the north. He was running 35 w to a 5/8 j-pole up 20 ft. Most of the hunters took I-355 north and then east. Charlie was hiding in a wooded area in Wheeling off Wolf Rd and Willow Rd near a number of homes. Willow Rd is a small road in this area and only goes west and there is a "hook" before it goes south to Camp McDonald Rd. Paul and I made the mistake of getting out at the bike trail under high voltage power lines. The interference kept us going around in circles. Tony AA9CC and Tom N9CBA went to the hook and were closer to Charlie. He was louder and they tracked him down right away as we did when we went north a hundred feet. Results:

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - June 20th, 2009

Vic K9WXV did not show to be the fox and Don W9RA volunteered to hide. Twenty min later Don started the hunt. He was south of the starting point and all the hunters headed south - some taking 355. Tony AA9CC and Joan took 355 from the start and got off Butterfield Rd and went over to Finley Rd to an office park and then back to Finley. Mike WA9FTS and Paul N9LXF took Rolhwing Rd to St Charles and then on 355 to Roosevelt west - Ooops! - then east to Rt 53 to Wilson and east to and dead end. Tony arrived and the FTS/LXF team was on foot and found Don in a loading dockjust north of Wilson Rd. Tony arrive a min later for 2nd. Charlie KB9DIM, who had equipment problems as well as a call from work, SWAGGED it to Roosevelt and then used his equipment to find Don for 3rd. Tom, N9CBA took 355 to Odgen and then got lost came in a min later to end the hunt. All the hunters finished within 8 min. We met at Portillo's at Butterfield and Finley. Results:

May CFMC Foxhunt
There was no hunt due to the Dayton Hamvention. The next hunt will be on June 20th.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - April 18th, 2009

Info from the fox - Tom N9CBA

It was a warm night, and the rain held off. Tom N9CBA hid outside with a 3-element tape measure beam pointed about NW with an upward tilt of maybe 25 degrees and a tilt of maybe 30 degrees off of vertical. That was enough to give a good signal to most of the hunters.
The location was  in Lombard south of Roosevelt Rd and east of Highland at the north end of S Grace Street-- at least one of the ends. The fox hid amongst/behind some trees on the east bank of a 3-ft wide creek and about 12 feet from the west edge of the road.
The road was, and was accessible from E 15th Place. Tony and Joanie were first on scene, and parked about 35 feet from the fox. Tony took a bearing from the car. He grabbed his portable gear as a transmission was ending, and tore west along the fence that was 18 feet north of the fox.
>Vic arrived a few minutes later. Joanie explained the foxhunting thing as Tony (who had one or two elements backwards) was checking out some more challenging areas. Eventually he went to the east side of Grace by the ponds via a hole in the fence.
There he ran into Charlie. Coming back toward the fox, they both climbed fences. Charlie chose the 10-ft wooden fence, and Tony took the chain link.
Then Don W9RA pulled into the area. It was a fun hunt to hide on. So the now larger group of hunters start checking the area, and Vic decides to check the area with his Mag Charger flashlight. "There he is" said Vic. Well, then three other hunters scored in quick succession. Paul then arrived into the parking lot to the east of the fox-- near the Babies "R" Us store. He spotted the hole in the
fence (not the aforementioned hole) and scored.
We munched at Culver's on Main near Roosevelt in Lombard.
The fox failed to bring a pen, so did not record times... but it was challenging in different ways, and it is not common to have everybody finish close in time with first over an hour after the start.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt - March 21st, 2009

Info from the fox - Tony AA9CC

We hid on a hill. It wasn't our primary spot, but on the way to the bike shop we passed it and it seemed good enough, a park with a view. The spot we sought was posted and gated and the contiguous spot seemed to difficult for the hunters to access. We lugged the equipment up the path and set up the ground antenna on top of eight four foot fiberglass sections. Quite unwieldy as we leaned it against the upper branches of a tree. Initial test shown the led still lit and heard an 8 call repeater ID on 146.760. All hunters has a direction on low power, 5 watts and the hunt was off on time. The signal was fairly strong but did not come up in strength as N9CBA drove south on 355. He exited too early on Roosevelt but manage to beat N9LXF and WA9FTS to the finish, but by only minutes. They took 355 to 88 west but drove past the park. W9RA had equipment problems, no front to back on the beam and gave up at 9:30. Charlie was at home hosting Alexi's 13th birthday party. Munches were at the base of the hill at Salerno's Italian restaurant.

Comments from Mike WA9FTS

It was the first full day of spring and the temp for the hunt was in the 50s. Three hunters arrived to compete: Tom N9CBA, Paul N9LXF and Mike WA9FTS and Don W9RA. Tony AA9CC provided a good strong signal to start the hunt. The signal was coming from the SW so two of the three hunters got on I355; Paul and Mike did at Lake St and Tom at North Av. Don took mostly surface streets to get in the area. Tony and Joan were found in Aurora in Frontenac Park off New York St between Eola Rd and N Commons Dr. They were sitting on a hill overlooking the Fox Valley Mall with tree in the back hiding a 8 section pole and a yagi at the top. Five watts was all that was needed for the hunters to hear at the starting point. Tom parked near Salernos restaurant and walked west up the hill to get there first. Paul and I parked to the south and then drove off and then back and out of the van. This was all that was needed as we ended up 1-1/2 min too late and secured 2nd. Don was nearby and gave up for a DNF. We met at Salernos for the munch. Results:

CFMC Foxhunt - Feb 21st - by Mike WA9FTS

Charlie KB9DIM and Alexis N9VRA were the fox on the 2nd CFMC hunt of the year. There were 4 hunt teams ready to find the fox. Charlie's signal was weak which indicated he was either far away or close running low power. Paul N9LXF and I got a reading to the SE and we chose to go south on I355. Tony AA9CC and Tom N9CBA chose to take I290 SE. I thought Don W9RA was going that way also but he got gas at the local Mobil station and then south on I355. Most of the hunters did not hear Charlie until they got close within a few miles. Paul and I got off at Roosevelt and headed east and, in retrospect, circled the fox two times taking Harlem Av to Cermak and up River Rd to Roosevelt and around again. We finally found Industrial Rd between two cemeteries and parked next to a cell tower. We noticed footprints in the snow which we found out later to be made by Tony who win. Tom finished right after. Don walked in to the building west of the cell tower for 3rd. We ended the hunt. Charlie picked out the Oliver Garden - over an hour wait - then Chili's - 45 min; we settled on Portillo's. Results:

Don, W9RA was the fox, and was located 3.5 miles at 22° from the starting point. I hid in a drainage ditch under an entrance road into a parking lot. The concrete drainage tile was 6 feet high and 6 foot wide. I ran a 25 foot RG400u to a 6foot RG58 ¼ wave antenna. The antenna was place on the concrete ledge just outside the opening of the underpass at ground level. The hounds all heard me at the staring point and the hunt started about 8:05 PM. The hounds came in at:

KB9DIM at 16 Min

AA9CC at 42 Min

N9CBA at 50 Min

N9LXF at 1Hr 15 Min

We all gathered at Buona Beef after the hunt for dinner.

Don's hiding location was at the SW corner of
Devon Rd and Arlington Hts Rd several hundred ft
west on the south side of Devon. - WM

CFMC Foxhunt - Dec 20th - Mike WA9FTS

It has been three months since I was on a foxhunt. I called Tom N9CBA
who was the fox. I asked him if I could join him. Tom said he would meet
me at Higgins and East River Rd. Easy? No! Tom got delayed on I-90 going
through the toll gate. Then Tom went to Cumberland and Bryn Mawr. Tom
finally found me in the parking lot of the Big 10 HQ at Higgins and
East River Rd. He transported his radio and car battery to the back
seat and we took off with 5 min to start the hunt. We found a spot
behind a Realty office at the NW corner of Devon and River Rd. We parked
next to a large pile of snow, and started the hunt on time. Some time
after the hunt started, Tony AA9CC said he had antenna problems. This
left Don W9RA to find us. It took an hour and a half, but Don finally
walked in for the win. He overshot us and got involved in the business
center at Cumberland and Bryn Mawr. With the metallized windows, there
was plenty of reflections to drive Don crazy. We met at Giordono's on
Mannheim after the hunt.

CFMC Foxhunt Report - November 15th, 2008 - Tony AA9CC

After scooping in the afternoon, we decided to hide in the car close to
home and found a spot on Google maps surrounded by bean fields and a
pond (1). After arriving, I duct tapped the 10 element beam to the
telescoping mast. The mast is made from PVC pipe, 2, 1-1/2 and 1 inch
diameters. It's floppy over 15 feet high with the weight of the beam
and coax in the wind. The mast was tapped to the fence and aimed to
the start point in Addison, approximately 19.6 miles away at 19.0
degrees. I could hear KB9DIM, W9RA and N9QDO on the input. We waited
for the new hunter, John N9QDO to drive from the old start point. He
had out of date information from the CFMC web site. I was surprised
that all of the hunters heard the signal, only 5 watts. I used low
power so the hunters would not think I was close. The hunt was off at
8:15. Don, W9RA had a erroneous south by south east heading from the
start and took 294 to I55 south. Tom, N9CBA exited too early on 355, at
Maple street in Lisle, took surface streets and encountered a road
block. Charlie, KB9DIM, had made a faulty repair in the afternoon of an
audio cable in the BMG unit, apparently difficult to access. He and
tossed in the towel on Cass ave near Argonne. We saw a flashlight at
the far end of the pond and by the time it got halfway down the gravel
access road, headlights appeared. They went into a run and I thought we
would see the sequel to the KB9DIM/WA9FTS incident of last September. I
expected the car to drive around the water tank and score, but Don
stopped at the end of the road and got out. John, N9QDO scored for
first place at 9:15 with Tom, N9CBA following. Munches where at Red
Robin near Clow airport. Don, K9VGJ would have joined us if munchies
were close to his house and offered to change it to Portillos in
Elmhurst. Mike, WA9FTS corrected the misleading web information at home
during the hunt. (WM Note: Misleading info was found on another site.
The info on the web was up-to-date).

John, N9QDO is from Gurnee, a ham for 18 years and holds a general
class license. He is working to upgrade to extra. He has an HF rig and
several antennas on the car. John has no foxhunting equipment so he
followed Tom, N9CBA on the hunt. Tom is offering a special deal on his
unused and lent out MK4 Sniffer DF unit that requires a 10 kc offset.

CFMC Foxhunt Report September 2008

It was a perfect night for hiding and I found a good spot, except for
one thing, the explosion of mosquitoes that followed last week's rain
forced me back into the car. I drove and found this spot, (Link to Map)
which looks like a slimy green waste water pond, but is actually terra
ferma of recent fill a few feet above the surroundings. I broke off a
box elder skeleton tree and braced it with several bulldozer mangled
limbs 40 feet from the car and placed in it the Moxon rectangle facing
west, about 8 feet high. This would reduce the signal by 20 dB in the
expected approach direction. Joanie joined me around 7:30 after phone
directions with french fries, a chocolate milkshake and spray on deet
repellent, which worked well when applied around the open windows. I
checked and could make several repeaters including Elgin on low power.
There was some prehunt chatter about a jammer, I could not hear Charlie
in the input which concerned me, but at the start in Addison all four
had a direction and the hunt was off. The hunt was going smoothly but
to our dismay, the car lights we saw poking around the school drove up
the gravel road and right at us during a transmission, it was Tom and
the time was only 8:26. He had made only one overshoot to Park ave.
Another hour passed with unfamiliar sheep like noises emanating from
the woods before Charlie and then Don asked for a extra transmissions.
Don drove up and was surprised to find us for second place. Charlie
through in the towel but was persuaded into continuing with access from
the east. Mike and Paul were on foot when Charlie drove in, as in a
wild rodeo, keeping Mike on the far side of the car. It was intentional
interference, Charlie had a laugh, Mike was pissed off whipped the beam
to the ground and skipped munchies at Partillo's. Tom reported the
signal was only level 2 at I-355 and rt56.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt – August 16th, 2008
By Charlie KB9DIM

Another beautiful summer evening, with mild temperatures, and clear skies.
Charlie KB9DIM, the fox, chose a hiding spot in DesPlains, just east of the I-294
tollway, and adjacent to the former Maine North High School.
The hunt started slightly late, by just a few minutes. All the hunters reported
hearing the fox's signal.
The fox was using a Yeasu FT-8800 mobile radio, putting out 15 watts, into 50
feet of RG-8 coax, feeding a 5/8 J-Pole antenna, which was hanging in a tree
about ten feet above the ground.

CFMC 2M Foxhunt – July 19th, 2008
By Mike WA9FTS

There were 4 hunt teams present: Tom N9CBA, Mike WA9FTS & Paul N9LXF, Charlie KB9DIM and Alexis N9VRA, and Chuck KA9KZO. The weather was perfect and the hunters were told by Don W9RA this was going to be easy or very hard. We did not listen carefully. All the hunters took off and drove too far. Charlie took off north to Irving Prk Rd, The other three hunt teams took off on I290 to the city and turned around at Rt 83. FTS and LXF went directly to Foxdale Pk just on the other side of Lake St. Out on foot, we spoted Charlie running in the park. We both affected each other and ran right past Don who was behind small structure next to the sound wall next to I290. Charlie recovered quickly as Paul and I got lost in the woods. We recovered to finish 2nd with Charlie winning the 4th in a row – we hunt every weekend. Tom and Chuck took longer and got there to finish seconds apart for 3rd and 4th. We met at Culvers on Lombard Rd a few blocks away. Results

Charlie KB9DIM and Alexis N9VRA hid near the Des Plaines River near the IM Canal. Getting to Charlie and Alexis was challenging. The path to take was a foot path off 171 and 55 and a walk 1/4 mile with weeds on both sides of the path. Charlie was using a 4 4l M2 yagi and a Yaesu mobile. Don W9RA was in the right spot and found the foot path. He got there while it was still light and win at 8:46. Tom N9CBA got there after dark and secured 2nd at 9:36. Paul N9LXF and Mike WA9FTS did not do so well and gave up. We all met at Appleby's in Hodgekins. Results:

The May hunt was cancelled due to the Dayton Hamvention. It will be rescheduled for June 21st and Charlie KB9DIM will be the fox.

April19th, 2008 - April CFMC Foxhunt
by Mike WA9FTS

Tony AA9CC was the fox and he provided the four hunt teams with a strong signal. A few minutes after 8 PM the hunters were on their way. All the hunters took 355 south except FTS and LXF - they took 53 south. Charlie KB9DIM and Alexis got off at the end and made their way to Boughton Rd. They drove through a large shopping center and off on foot into a field south. They found Tony and Joan hidden under a camo blanket for the win. A few minutes later Paul and I arrived but it took us another 15 min to find Tony and Joan. The area had several deep (5 ft) gullies and they were on the side of one. They were really well hidden. Tom N9CBA arrived and found Tony about 20 min later with Greg N9SA giving up. Great spot and super coverup with the camo blanket. Then the down side. Tony said he picked Red Robin in the shopping center. We could not find it; it did not exist! Then it was up to the hunters to find a restaurant. After an hour of not agreeing on a spot to eat, Paul and I went home
to get some food at my place. The rest of the hunters did the same and went home. This is an example of no matter how well the fox runs the hunt itself, he is still responsible to find an acceptable spot to meet after the hunt. Results:

Despite higher expectations, the fox did one of those
parked-in-the-car hunts. The location was the southwest corner of
routes 56 and 83 in the parking lot of the Hilton.

The antenna was a low horizontal mag-mount in the shadow of the tall
high-rise to the southeast of the hiding spot. The antenna was fed
by a radio in its 5-watt setting.

The munch was at Portillo's on Rt 83 north of St. Charles Road.

by TONY-AA9CC

I was looking for high elevations on Google Earth and found a 820 foot hill just south east of Naperville road and I-88. A dead end named Old Ham Road seem a likely spot, but with time to kill I drove around and found a way into a cell tower site on a wooded residential lot. I backed the car into the bushes, hidden from the road. The weather was overcast, 30F and 6 inches of snow on the ground. All hunters had a direction using 30 watts and the foxhunting setup. Tom was the first to drive in at 8:40 followed a minute later by Mike on foot yelling about Paul not stopping and letting him out. This, plus Paul squealing the tires arose a neighbor, who, thanks to Tom's explanation of the activity, didn't call the police. Charlie with Lex drove in at 8:45, Don at 8:55 and Greg ant 9:05. Munchies were an Buena Beef a quarter mile to the west.

Greg N9SA started the hunters out with a good signal to start. All of
the hunters headed east down Lake St. Tom N9CBA turned south on Rt
83. Tony AA9CC laid back behind Paul N9LXF and Mike WA9FTS which was
a good move. Paul and Mike overshot to York Rd and then south on York
completely lost only to recover later. Greg was in his car just off
Lake St behind a building on Fullerton Ave. It was the 2nd building
off Church St and an easy drive-up hunt. Don W9RA just beat Tom N9CBA
for 2nd after Tony won by not overshooting. Charlie KB9DIM and Alexis
finished 4th and we ended the hunt. We met at the Elmhurst House for

December15th, 2007 - December CFMC Foxhunt
by Mike WA9FTS

Winter arrived with a blizzard and poor driving conditions. Paul
N9LXF and I arrived 10 min befure 8 PM. Greg N9SA and then Don W9RA
showed up. Charlie KB9DIM called for a list of hunters and it was
given to him. Tony AA9CC called and said he went to the wrong
starting point - at Harper College - quite a distance away
considering the road conditions. I did not want to wait and started
to leave but Greg N9SA said we should start the hunt instead of
waiting. So we started but all the hunters went in the wrong
direction due to reflections. Don W9RA headed north, Greg N9SA went
NE and Paul and I went east. We finally got back to the starting
point 25 min into the hunt and headed west on Lake St. Tony then
called and said he was quiting somewhere around North Ave. We had DF
equipment problems twice around Barrington Rd and ended up turning
north on Rt59 to Irving Pk Rd east to Barrington Pk Rd. We overshot
and came back to a cell site - wrong one - lets go to the one next
door. We found Charlie KB9DIM in his Jeep. Sorry, we were 5 min late
to Greg who just left with the win. Several minutes later Don arrived
the end the hunt.

November 17th, 2007 - November CFMC Foxhunt
by Mike WA9FTS

I was not at this hunt but acquired the results from several sources.
Tom N9CBA was the fox and was hiding in a ditch near the intersection
of Arlington Hts Rd and Thorndale. Apparently there have been car
brake-in in the parking lot where Tom left his car. A concerned
citizen saw Tom taking stuff out of "a" car - not knowing that it was
his. He called the police and the officer, finding Tom in the ditch,
told Tom to raise his has and that he was under arrest. After an
explanation, the hunt started with a small delay. Charlie KB9DIM and
Alexis found Tom first for the win and Tony AA9CC for 2nd. Don W9RA
and Greg N9SA ended the hunt. The munch spot was not revealed. If I
receive further info, it will be indicated here.

October 20th, 2007 - October CFMC Foxhunt
by Mike WA9FTS

Tony AA9CC got the hunters off with a good strong signal. Some of the
hunters got and east reading and others got a NE reading. All 4 hunt
teams got to the area about the same time. Tony was hiding on the
north side of a creek north of Higgins Rd and Mannheim Rd. his was
near the tollway and next to the water amoungst bolders. Tom N9CBA
made it to Tony for the win by coming in from the east around a
building along with Greg N9SA for 2nd. Paul N9LXF and I had a sure
thing with signals coming from bushes just east of the RR tracks. We
could not get away from this area even though crossing the tracks and
going a hundred feet east would have been really good. Only until
Charlie KB9DIM arrive did Paul N9LXF follow to end the hunt. We met
at Barnaby's at Higgins and Wolf. Results:

September 15th, 2007 - September CFMC Foxhunt
by Charlie KB9DIM

A new starting point had to be found for the CFMC Foxhunt, since
Walgreen's is planning on building a new store on the old starting
point. We chose a new starting point in Addison Illinois, in a Park
not far from Rohlwing Road, and Lake Street. Since we were trying out
a new starting point, I wanted to choose a hiding spot that would
test all the hunters. So I drew a line from the new site through
O'Hare Field, which also turned out to be tangential to most of the
area highways. The spot was located in a park along the north branch
of the Chicago River in Evanston, which was 18.8 miles from the
start. This hiding spot would force the hunters to make important
decisions about which route to take very early in the hunt. At the
hiding spot I used an M2 four element Yagi beam, vertically polarized
mounted on a mast about 15 feet high, pointed toward the starting
point. The antenna was fed with 50 feet of RG-8 coax from a Yaesu
FT-2800M set on high power, which was nominally 45 Watts. With the
tough job of finding a good route to the hiding spot, I decided to
not dig in too deep, so I chose a park bench to hide underneath. I
was hoping the hunters would have a little difficulty in spotting me,
but that was not the case.

August 18th, 2007 - August CFMC Foxhunt
by Mike WA9FTS

There was a threat of rain but it held off for the hunt. Tom N9CBA
had a good signal at the start for the 4 hunt teams. Three of the
hunters got a NW reading but only two headed NW. The DIM and CC team
went in the right direction - down Lake St; the RA and FTS team
headed SW to I-88. Don W9RA did recover by taking I-355 north to Lake
St. The FTS team decided on a slower route - up Highland Ave. Charlie
KB9DIM got to Tom quickly for the win. Tom was hiding next to a fence
protected by bushes in Centennial Park. This was just east of Rt 53
and south of Lake St. Only 2nd place was close with Tony AA9CC
beating out Don W9RA by seconds. The FTS team got there as fast as
possible considering the route to end the hunt. We all met at
Culver's a few blocks away. Results:

4. Mike WA9FTS, Paul N9LXF

July 21st, 2007 - July CFMC Foxhunt
by Mike WA9FTS

The weather could not be better - cool in the mid 70s and a clear sky
with several clouds. Four hunters showed up at the starting point:
Tom N9CBA, Don W9RA, Tony AA9CC and Charlie KB9DIM with Alexis.
Paul N9LXF and I found a place at the NW corner of Ackerman Park in
Glen Ellyn. It was located just north of St. Charles Rd and west of
Swift Rd. We drove through the park past the baseball diamonds and
parked at the west end of the parking lot. We then carried our
portable gear along a gravel road (1000') and set up behind a pile of
rocks. We set up a j-Pole antenna and decorated it with long crawling
weeds to camoflage it. We used a 12v battery and powered up a 2m
radio and selected low power (5w). Paul noticed a bike path to the
north and I checked it out finding a easy path. This was the only
easy path as we found out later. Paul then went out along to road to
act as lookout.
The hunt started at 8:03 as we guessed how long till the first hunter
would arrive. Paul won with a guess of 45 min. Tom shows up from the
north - and did NOT find an easy path. He sees me and slowly crashes
through the thick growth; then disappears with a shocked sound -then
silence. He was ok but lost his glasses. I told him to drop his
hankie and then tag me. He finally made it at 41 min into the hunt.
No flashlight amoungst us so we waited for the next hunter. Tony
arrived and then drove off - then back. He finally got out and
finished 2nd at 51 min. He had no flashlight either. So we wait for
the next hunter. Don parked by my van in the parking lot and walked
the gravel road. He first went to the east and then over to finish
3rd at 59 min. He had a flashlight but we waited for Charlie to end
the hunt. He walked across the grass field to end the hunt at 61 min.
It then took several minutes and the glasses were found.
We headed off to Portillo's on North Av at Bloomingdale Rd for the munch.

June 2007 Foxhunt
by Tom N9CBA

The fox, Tom N9CBA hid just north of a bike path and south of the
intersection of 9th Avenue and 26th Street in or near Broadview. The
bike path was just north of Salt Creek. The evening was very warm.
The cicadas were out, but they were not all that noisy. The woods
were mixed with areas of heavy vegetation and more open areas. The
fox was in the weeds near the edge of one of the open areas-- a path
popular with deer it turned out. The antenna was a twin-lead J-pole
with the tip about 12 feet up. The height was due to a tall sapling
that was easy enough to bend over, but was springy enough to carry
the antenna up upon release. The angle of the antenna was about 30
degrees off of vertical. The antenna was fed thru about 12 feet of
coax from a handheld in its 2 watt setting. Since the location was
only two miles from the starting point, the signal was strong. Before
the hunt, one deer stopped about 20 feet away from the then-standing
fox. After about eying the fox for about 20 seconds, it continued on
its path at a trot and was followed closely by a second deer. One
deer was seen later about 100 feet away by the fox. The vegetation
made things more tricky for the hunters. Both had not ventured
significantly north of Cermak because they figured out that the fox
was close. They both checked some other areas south of the creek
before parking at 9th and 26th. Charlie was first on the scene, but
Mike and Paul were along a bit later. There was significant bush
beating by Charlie, Mike, and Paul This was frequently punctuated by
Mike's gnashing of teeth and proclamation his favored word of the
moment. The antenna was less visible than usual. The hunters probably
had their eyes tuned for something more noticeable. But Mike
persevered to score first. Several minutes later Charlie scored,
making good use of his bright light. Nobody saw the fox's car. We
munched at Buona Beef on Wolf near Cermak. It was reported that at
some point Alexis had seen a deer up close.

Paul N9LXF and Mike WA9FTS hid for Don W9RA who was fishing out east.
We found a dead end street on the west end of Glenview at the end of
Longvalley Rd. We ran a j-pole up about 7 ft attached to a tree and
running 30 w. We had a weak signal at the starting point (Harlem and
Cermak). The hunters had a north reading and headed west to I-294.
Tom continued to receive a signal that got stronger as he headed
north. It then started to swing east. Tom got off at Willow Rd and
south into the smallest town of Golf. Tom walked across a small
bridge to find us for the win. Charlie lost the signal and never got
close. Later he met us at Portillo's on Skokie Blvd just south of
Golf Rd. Results:

Tom N9CBA hid with Don K9VGJ in Don's car on a night where an
outside-the-car would be expected. Don did not transmit during the
hunt, so as to not give away that information. Tom's car was left in
the Fry's parking lot on the other side of I88. The spot was tricky.
It was not quite the originally planned one, but it was challenging
for the hunters. It was also amusing for the foxes. Don, W9RA, came
walking in with his 440 beam for first. He had stayed off of
expressways. When Mike, WA9FTS, came walking in for second, he
complained that his ground gear, a 3-element tape measure Yagi hooked
to a fox sniffer receiver, was reading backwards. Don, K9VGJ,
suggested that he try it during the next transmission. Sure enough,
Don found it did point backwards. It turns out that during an
overhaul, Mike had mounted the sniffer to the director end of the
beam rather than the reflector end of the beam. It would have made a
good photo for the April issue of Squelch Tale. Charlie also walked
in. We can leave that story for eyeball QSOs. Everybody heard the
vertical mag-mount driven with the radio in the 25-watt setting. The
location was near Highland Avenue and 31st Street. Munch was at Buona
Beef on Butterfield.

road and a quarter mile north of route 38 behind a snow bank near a
construction site, approximately 24.3 miles at 173.3 degrees from the
Harlem/Cermak start point. Map of fox location: The elevation was 780
feet, about 30 feet above the terrain to the east. It was a clear
view for several miles. I was using a 5/8 magnet mount antenna and 50
watts. The weather was clear, about 18 degrees. Four of the five
hunters had a direction and the hunt was off on schedule. Another
repeater was breaking squelch, but I couldn't make out the call.
There was some traffic on CFMC asking for directions to the
Rock-n-Roll McDonalds downtown. I could hear the mobile station on
the input. After a while, Tom drove up, sounded somewhat horse and
returned home, as not to spread his cold. The other hunters arrived
several transmissions apart. Mike reported finding many better hiding
spots, but where I was, was good also. His team had some trouble with
equipment quirks. Charlie radioed in with equipment failure of the
BNG unit and I directed him to munches at Portillio's next to
Pheasant Run. Don asked for an extra transmission and would have
drove by me twice if the snow bank were any higher. Greg had just
replaced the board in the Dick Smith Doppler an had added shunt
capacitance to the antenna diodes to reduce switching noise. It will
be interesting to see if they caused the unit's erratic behavior, or
if it was because it was not calibrated in time.

January 2007 CFMC Foxhunt
by Greg N9SA

It was a cool 26 degree night for a fox hunt on Jan 20th 2007. Five
hunt teams were ready at the starting point at Cermak and Harlem and
all heard the test transmission. The hounds were released during the
first one minute transmission that started at 8:03 PM
The fox, N9SA was in his car with a 5 watt signal feeding a 3 element
homemade yagi at about 18 ft. First to arrive was Tony AA9CC who
drove in from the south. Only six minutes later was Charlie who drove
in from the north. Eight minutes after that Tom drove down a road on
the east side of the railroad track and crossed over on foot. It was
interesting to see that there was no convoy this night and yet they
all did well. Munch was at Culvers Restaurant at Grand and 25th Ave
in Franklin Park, a few blocks northwest of the hiding spot.
